Deeptha will deliver a lecture on technical aspects of the vehicle and its operations, difference between the conventional vehicles and hybrids, maintenance activities, the most important safety guidelines, what to do in an emergency , battery safety and the best driving habits to get the maximum fuel efficiency etc. Mr. Maxwell Ranasinghe will discuss about how to obtain genuine parts at better prices to maintain the vehicle well.

Further membership of Hybrid Car Owners Club will be offered free of charge to all the participants. This club membership will help hybrid owners in sharing their experience about usage of the vehicle and obtain discounts for spare parts from M.M.Organisation. After the in house seminar, a practical session will be held to demonstrate the major aspects of the vehicles operations.

TOYOTA CITY, Japan — The Toyota Aqua went on sale on Monday in Japan, priced at the U.S. equivalent of $21,703, previewing the 2013 Toyota Prius C in the U.S.

Toyota said the Aqua has a fuel efficiency of 83 miles per gallon on Japan’s JC08 test cycle and 94 mpg on the official 10-15 test cycle.

The Aqua is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine rated at 72 horsepower and an electric motor rated at 45 kW. The combined output is 98 hp providing 0-60 acceleration in less than 10.7 seconds according to Toyota. The motor is fed power from a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack.

Toyota said it plans to sell 12,000 Aquas per month in Japan.

The Aqua name, which means water in Latin, is “meant to break the conventional image of hybrid vehicles, becoming something fluid and not constrained to any one shape or role — like free-flowing water,” said Toyota in a statement. The Aqua targets such vehicles as the Honda Fit Hybrid in Toyota’s home market and is designed to attract younger buyers seeking a less expensive hybrid.

The Toyota Prius C concept debuted last January at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, showcasing a “value-oriented” hybrid bound for U.S. showrooms in 2012, said Toyota at the time. The production version is expected to be unveiled in two weeks at the 2012 Detroit show. Pricing has not been announced on the Prius C here.

Toyota said the Aqua will be offered in Japan in three grades — L, S and G — with the hybrid topping out at the U.S. equivalent of $23,756.

In Japan, Toyota’s TRD performance division introduced sporty versions of the Aqua. The Aqua TRD features an aero body kit with front spoiler, side skirts, roof spoiler and rear apron/diffuser. Hardware upgrades are limited to lowering springs, stiffer shocks, larger alloy wheels and chrome exhaust pipes.

Duty imposed on buses, Lorries, tractors removed

Customs duty imposed on buses, Lorries, tractors and new engines for Lorries have been completely removed.

The Ministry of Finance informs that the government has decided to reduce the duty charge for import of lorry and bus tires by 50 percent. This measure has been taken to encourage import of buses to help the tourist industry and to improve transport services. The Ministry of Finance informs that this measure was taken on a proposal submitted by the President in the budget.

Customs officials said that from January 01, value added taxes on buses, Lorries and trucks have been lifted giving effect to a proposal on the 2012 budget. Other items from which value added taxes have been lifted are raw materials used for spectacles and frames, sunglasses, perfumes, sports equipment, speakers and digital cinema equipment, photo sensitive semiconductor devices.

Value added tax have also been reduced on spares for poultry industry, sawn wood, mammoties, forks, moulding (steel, glass, rubber, plastic), machinery for rubber and plastic industries, greenhouses and poly tunnels.

First accident on expressway | Breaking News

An accident occurred on the Southern Expressway at 7.10 this morning, (28/11/2011) at the 8th mile post in Kahatuduwa. The two individuals who were injured were travelling to Colombo. They were admitted to the Horana Hospital and have now been discharged.

The police said that the individuals were identified as a foreigner and a local driver and they had been travelling over the speed limit of 100kmph.

The expressway was declared open last morning, in a ceremony by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

2012 Honda Insight Road Test

The 2012 Honda Insight sees no major changes. This gas/electric hybrid car is a 5-passenger, 4-door hatchback that mates a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine with a battery-powered electric motor for 98 horsepower total. Honda’s hybrid system allows the gas engine to shut off at a stop and restart again when the driver releases their foot from the brake pedal. No plug-in charging is required. The sole transmission is a continuously variable (CVT) unit that behaves like an automatic. Trim levels carry over from 2011 and include Base, LX, and EX. Safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, and front-side airbags. Cruise control, an upgraded audio system, and a USB port are standard on all but the Base. A navigation system with rearview camera is available on the EX, and versions so equipped are priced as separate models. A wireless cell-phone link is newly standard on EX models without navigation.

Toyota Prius Start Up Problems

Toyota Prius (hybrid) wont start, what’s wrong?

When I pressed the power on button, nothing would happen. No lights, no sound, no response… the car was absolutely dead. (NHW 20)

What can I do? Is it a problem of the 12v battery? or the 400v? Can a Prius 2 be started with jumper cables on the 12v battery? Or should I just call the Toyota official dealer?

Please help, do you have any ideas or suggestions what I can do to get the car working or what is wrong?  Dr. Sampath

Question about Prius Dashboard Light Brightness at Night Time (NHW 20)

If you are a Prius Gen2 owner who does a considerable amount of night driving and use the steering wheel controls quite often, then this mod is for you!

As a person who constantly answers phone calls via the built-in Bluetooth handsfree, change radio stations, change climate settings, etc. while on the move, I find it quite annoying when trying to locate the right button(s) to press even when the lights are switched on at night. This is on account of the brightness level of the steering wheel controls being extremely low.

I have resolved this issue by modifying the circuitry of the steering wheel controls so that the light intensity of these backlit buttons is increased by many folds. Moreover, I have introduced a control knob (located below the steering wheel column) to offer better control over the brightness level.
